A Letter from our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

The Leprosy Mission Canada was born over 125 years ago in a small dining room in Guelph, Ontario. Women of heart and vision met with Wellesley Bailey, the original founder of The Leprosy Mission. They took his passion and the stories of leprosy to Canadians from coast to coast.

The cycle of surveying, educating and treating leprosy is the core focus of the Mission’s work. You may have heard the old adage: “It’s better to teach people to fish, than simply feed them a single fish.” The same is true in our work. From instructing school children how to recognize the disease to helping families deal with the very real effects of leprosy, we are committed to ministry.

The work of the Mission has grown greatly over the years. Wellesley Bailey was only able to offer prayer, spiritual comfort and some physical comfort to those suffering with this disease. When a full cure was introduced in 1982, the Mission's primary purpose became to find, diagnose and bring the cure.

Today, we still offer these elements, but also go further. We offer: reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, micro enterprise loans, prosthetic replacement for missing limbs and training in new skills. Where those suffering the effects of leprosy are in need, we are there attempting to help.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Without your prayers, financial support and continuous care, we cannot reach out to those suffering from the effects of leprosy.

Sincerely,
Peter Derrick
Executive Director, The Leprosy Mission Canada
