World Leprosy Situation
The Leprosy Mission is committed to working with the United Nations, the World Health Organization and national governments in order to cure and care for people with leprosy around the world.
 One way the Mission is doing this is through working on the United Nation’s eight Millennium Development Goals, which range from halving extreme poverty to providing universal primary education by the target date of 2015. These goals form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and leading development institutions and have stimulated unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest people, including people affected by leprosy.
The Leprosy Mission is also working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to achieve the WHO’s Global Leprosy Strategy for 2011 to 2015. The main goal of this strategy is to reduce the rate of new cases of leprosy with grade-two disabilities (before nerve damage develops) by 35% by the end of 2015, as compared to 2011 rates.
The Mission also partners with national governments in the countries where TLM works in order to help as many leprosy patients as possible. The woman pictured on this page, like every other person TLM helps, received treatment for leprosy because her national government was willing to support TLM staff and hospitals in their country.
